PETAA is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Peter Freebody (1950-2026), one of Australia’s most influential literacy scholars and a leading voice in literacy education internationally. Peter’s research transformed understandings of literacy teaching and learning, most notably through the co-development of the Four Resources Model, a framework that continues to inform classroom practice around the world. He was also a key architect of the Australian Curriculum: English, helping to shape a vision of literacy that recognised the complex knowledge and capabilities young people need to participate fully in contemporary society. Throughout his distinguished career, Peter combined scholarly excellence with a deep commitment to educational equity, curriculum innovation, and improving outcomes for all learners.

His leadership extended across universities, government advisory bodies, and international literacy organisations, where his insights were widely respected and sought after. As a researcher, mentor, and teacher, he inspired generations of educators and scholars through both his intellectual rigour and his generosity of spirit.

Beyond his considerable professional achievements, Peter will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and deeply decent person whose warmth touched all who worked with him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends, and colleagues, and honour his enduring legacy within the literacy community and Australian education.
