Luka Lesson presents Poetry in the classroom

The Darling Downs Branch of ETAQ is delighted to host Luka Lesson for a one-hour workshop especially for teachers.  Luka will share insights from his journey of being a once reluctant high school English student, to a full-time successful poet and will lead teachers through a workshop which uncovers the best ways to facilitate the writing and performing of poetry in the classroom. Luka will take questions and discuss how he would approach different challenges and contexts, leaving us empowered to teach poetry with confidence.

Born and raised in Brisbane, Greek–Australian performance poet, rapper and hip-hop artist Luka Lesson, showcases the power of spoken word poetry. Lesson’s connection with his audience is charismatic and tangible. He is an engaging writer and performer who recognises the potential of his art to empower, question, challenge, teach and liberate. The poet’s work varies from poems such as ‘Raising Consciousness’ and ‘Hy/ide Park’, both written specifically for students and focusing on the importance of having a voice and using it with integrity, to ‘Yiayia’, a tribute to his beloved grandmother’s commonsense approach to life. Luka Lesson is an activist poet who seeks to give voice to the marginalised. His work is passionate, linguistically deft and highly skilled.
