Grammar Workshop

Garry Collins, ETAQ's grammar guru will present another in his series of grammar workshops.

The purpose is to assist attendees to develop their understandings of grammar in order to fully comprehend and to effectively teach the Australia Curriculum: English (AC:E). Also highly relevant to Years 11 & 12.

After a short general introduction, we’ll work with short texts suitable for use in secondary school English classrooms. In 2023, the core text for this workshop was Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night. On this occasion, the core text will be Tennyson’s poem ‘The Lady of Shalott’. The texts we’ll work with will be extracts from the poem or ones about it or generated from it.

Participants will be guided in the analysis of the grammatical choices that have been made in the composition of the texts and have the opportunity to consider how those choices construct particular sorts of meanings. Evaluative language and nominalisation will be touched on. The activity could be considered as a mental-muscle-building work-out in the “grammar gym”.

If you have done one of these workshops previously, the activities this time will be similar, but the texts will be different.

References will be made to content descriptions and elaborations from the most recent version of the F-10 AC:E, Version 9.0, issued in 2022 after an extensive review.
