Former QUT students
1. Dr Anita Jetnikoff at QUT is keen to contact two former students understood to be teaching in Brisbane (Peter Appelgate and Michelle Deer). They are asked to email her at a.jetnikoff@qut.edu.au
Brisbane March seminar 2010
2. Members in the Brisbane area are reminded that our first Saturday seminar for 2010 is scheduled for 13 March with the venue probably the Anglican Church Grammar School at East Brisbane (“Churchie”).
3. The working title for the seminar is “Living with external testing: How to prepare kids for NAPLAN and the like and still deliver a balanced, quality English program”.
4. The guest speaker will be Dr Jill Freiberg, a Senior Lecturer in Griffith University’s School of Education and Professional Studies with a special interest in assessment. The plan is that Dr Freiberg would provide the “big picture” context and more specific details about how various schools are coping with current challenges would be provided in a range of supporting workshops.
5. Volunteer presenters are sought for these supporting workshops. The current plan is that these sessions be quite short (35 minutes) and repeated so that participants can rotate through 3 presentations.
6. If you’d be prepared to share how your school has coped with the pressures of NAPLAN or other aspects of external testing please contact me at gazco48@bigpond.net.au
National English Curriculum
7. A update today from ACARA advises that:
7.1. The draft curriculum for K-10 English will be released in mid February and public consultation sought to May 2010.
7.2. Consultation on the senior years’ curriculum is planned from April to June 2010.
8. There is provision for an online survey and forums at both state and national level. ETAQ will probably run sessions at the March and May Brisbane seminars to enable members to share ideas and provide input to inform an ETAQ response.
