A grammar workshop will be offered on zoom on Saturday 27 May from 9am to 1pm. Its purpose is to assist attendees to develop their understandings of grammar in order to fully comprehend and to effectively teach the Australia Curriculum: English (AC:E). Also highly relevant to Years 11 & 12. After a short general introduction, we’ll work with short texts suitable for use in secondary school English classrooms. On this occasion, the texts will be from, or related to, Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night. The material will be the same as the workshop conducted in Term 1 this year. Participants will be guided in the analysis of the grammatical choices that have been made in the composition of the texts and have the opportunity to consider how those choices construct particular sorts of meanings. Evaluative language (the Appraisal system) and nominalisation will feature in some of the chosen texts. The activity could be considered as a mental-muscle-building work-out in the “grammar gym”. References will be made to content descriptions and elaborations from the most recent version of the F-10 AC:E, Version 9.0, issued in 2022 after an extensive review.
