Short Stories and Poetry

The transformation of text is demanding and difficult, but it is also often a thing of beauty. General English Unit three requires students to transform a poem into a short story, which requires us to guide them through this process. Using poems as stimulus for short story is inspiring and energising and this workshop will offer practical approaches to this work, not just for teachers of Unit Three, but for teachers of writing at any level. These will be based on Robert Browning’s “Porphyria’s Lover,” Samuel Wagon Watson’s Love poem, Carol Ann Duffy’s “Little Red Cap,” Ali Alizadeh’s “My People” and Kathy Jetnil-Kijner’s “Fishbone Hair.”

Emma Monfries has been an English teacher since 2004 and secretary of Townsville Branch of ETAQ. She taught at Ryan Catholic College in Townsville for many years.
