About us

Who is ETAQ?

The English Teachers Association of Queensland Inc (ETAQ) is a professional association dedicated to providing support and advocacy for teachers of English in Queensland secondary and middle schools.

Since 1967, we've been enhancing the professional status of English teachers, organising activities and exchanging ideas. Today we have almost 500 members including individuals such as teachers, teacher educators and others interested in the teaching of English, and schools with corporate membership.

Affiliated with the national English teacher body, the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE), ETAQ represents around 3000 teachers, pre-service teachers and teacher educators in Queensland.

Our mission

To provide professional support and advocacy for English teachers in Queensland schools.

What we do

ETAQ offers professional development activities (both face-to-face and virtual) including seminars, conferences, forums and webinars. This provides networking opportunities for English teachers across the state and encourages professional sharing about English teaching.

Through our publications, email bulletins, website and social media platforms we circulate ideas, provide information and allow members to connect and discuss issues of relevance.

We advocate for our members on state and national curriculum bodies and to other relevant government organisations. We express views on behalf of our members in public debates about education in general and English teaching in particular. Queensland English teachers are well represented at AATE and we contribute to the running of that body.

Selected ETAQ members can receive funding to assist them to participate in state and national conferences. We also recognise outstanding English teachers and honour them with Life Membership and special awards including the Botsman Award.
