Great Reads after-school presentation
Included in the most recent mailing was the flyer/registration form for the “Great Reads for Adolescents” after-school presentation to be held in the Lilley Centre at Brisbane Grammar School on Tuesday 24 July starting with refreshments from 4:00 pm. This form is also available for download from the website at http://www.etaq.org.au/?page_id=860. The boom gate on the entrance off College Road is open from 4:00 pm.
Our guest speaker is the knowledgeable and entertaining children’s literature consultant, Joy Lawn. This is always an excellent event and I look forward to seeing a good roll-up of Brisbane-based members.
The modest $20 fee can be paid at the door but it is essential for catering purposes that those attending advise our Admin Officer Trish Purcell Trish Purcell (trish.purcell@bigpond.com) no later than this coming Friday, 20 July.
Assistance to attend the State Conference
Financial assistance is available for two country members to attend ETAQ’s annual State Conference. On offer is free registration and $200 towards the cost of travel and accommodation. All that is required in return is an article based on the conference experience for publication in Words’Worth. To apply, just send me an email (gazco48@bigpond.net.au) explaining why you would be a suitable recipient.
Free registration is also available for a Brisbane based student member in return for an article for the journal. Again, send me an email to apply. Applications close Friday 20 July.
Feedback on ACARA’s draft senior English courses
A updated draft response (Draft 4 dated 14 July 12) to the suite of senior English subjects proposed by ACARA for the Australian Curriculum has been posted to the “Australian Curriculum” Page to be found under the Discussions tab on the ETAQ website at http://www.etaq.org.au/?page_id=881.
Section 8 Literature needs fleshing out by the addition of input by members able to make an informed comparison of the ACARA English subject and the QSA English Extension (Literature) syllabus. Comments should be sent to me at gazco48@bigpond.net.au. Our final response needs to reach ACARA by 20 July.
AATE National Conference
Members are again reminded of the great opportunity to combine CPD and travel represented by this year’s AATE national conference to be held at Sydney Grammar School on 3-4 October. Early Bird registrations close soon – on 1st August. On-line registration can be effected at http://www.englishteacher.com.au/FiveBells/Home.aspx. I hope that I’ll be joined by a strong ETAQ contingent.
ETANSW, the conference host, has advised the following: We have arranged special accommodation deals for guests during the conference in Sydney this year. Available until the end of July 2012 when the “Early Bird” registrations also close. Anyone interested may contact kate.dickson@flightcentre.com.au, PH: 02 8121 2832, FAX: 02 9923 8696, The link on the ETANSW website is: http://www.englishteacher.com.au/Portals/EnglishTeachers/National%20Conference/ETA%20Booking2%20Form%20Kate%20Dickson.pdf
Time to register for the State Conference
With the theme of “Making connections”, the ETAQ State Conference will be held at Lourdes Hill College in Brisbane on Saturday 18 August. Hard copies of the program, registration form and workshop selection form were included in the most recent mailing and these documents can also be downloaded from the website at http://www.etaq.org.au/?page_id=308. A $20 late fee will apply to registrations postmarked after 10 August.
Once you’ve perused the program, I’m sure you’ll agree that this is a PD event not to be missed.
Breakfast for Jim Buckley
As advised in English Matters 5-12, it is proposed to conuct a breakfast to formally mark Jim Buckley’s retirement from the Management Committee after 20 years service. The event is planned for Sunday 19 August, the day following the state conference, in the hope that some country members will be able to attend. The event will start at 9:00 am and the restaurant venue will be advised as soon as a booking is confirmed. The cost to attendees will be $20 per person with ETAQ subsidising any additional costs. If you wish to be part of this event, please let me know via email to gazco48@bigpond.net.au so that an appropriate booking can be made.
